Miscarriage Help

To confirm your miscarriage, we can provide a variety of tests and procedures to make sure you are well taken care of.

Missed abortion

The placental and embryonic tissues remain in the uterus, but the embryo has died or was never formed (blighted ovum.) Usually, there is no bleeding.

Inevitable abortion

A miscarriage that can’t be avoided because the cervix is open and bleeding has begun.

Threatened abortion

There is bleeding, but the cervix is not open. Most threatened abortions continue as normal pregnancies and continue without more problems.

Doctors sometimes use the word 'abortion' to describe a miscarriage, because that’s the medical term. There are different types, such as natural (miscarriage), elective, threatened, missed, incomplete, septic, and complete.

Incomplete abortion
Complete abortion
Septic abortion
Induced/Elective abortion

When a woman has passed pregnancy tissue, but some remains in the uterus.

This condition happens when all of the tissue has not passed and becomes infected. It can be a life-threatening infection and requires immediate medical care (usually including D&C.)

This means you have passed all the pregnancy tissues. It is common for miscarriages that happen before 12 weeks.

The abortion procedure that must be performed in a specially licensed facility and follow strict legal guidelines established by the State.

Surgical Treatment Of Miscarriage (D&C)

Sometimes, your doctor may recommend a procedure called dilation and curettage (D&C). This is a minor procedure that removes pregnancy tissue from the uterus and is often the quickest and safest way to complete a miscarriage. During a D&C, the doctor gently opens (dilates) the cervix and uses gentle suction, and sometimes a small instrument called a curette, to clear the uterus. The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes.

In most cases, a D&C is done in a hospital or surgery center under general anesthesia, rather than in the doctor’s office. This can make the process more expensive and time-consuming. Even with good insurance, deductibles are often over $1,000, and you may spend several hours at the hospital. Scheduling can also take a few days, and sometimes insurance approval is needed before the procedure can be done.

In many cases, we can arrange for this procedure to be done the same day, using local anesthesia or light sedation, which is usually more convenient and comfortable for patients.

Our doctor has extensive experience performing D&Cs safely in the office, using IV sedation (often called “twilight” sleep). This method is much safer, less expensive, and quicker than having the procedure done under general anesthesia in a hospital.

The entire process requires only one visit and costs $750, which includes your consultation, ultrasound, and all necessary medications (except Rhogam, which is rarely needed). In many cases, we can schedule your procedure the same day.

Recovery is usually just a few hours while the medication wears off, and most patients do not need a follow-up visit unless they want one. If you choose local anesthesia, you can even drive yourself home and return to your normal activities the same day.
